Time is critical when you have a heart attack. The longer you wait, the more your heart is damaged and the less chance you have of a good recovery. In spite of this, studies show about half of all heart attack victims wait two hours or longer before they get help. When you have chest pain -- go to the Emergency Department at San Angelo Community Medical Center immediately. When you arrive at the Emergency Department, tests will be done to help determine the cause of your pain. If needed, the full resources of San Angelo Community Medical Center's cardiac care program are here to help you. If the pain turns out to be heartburn or another less-threatening condition, you and your loved ones will have the peace of mind of knowing for sure.

The American Heart Association says your body likely will send one or more of these warning signals of a heart attack:

  • Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes.
  • Pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms.
  • Chest discomfort with light headedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath.

Not all of these signs occur in every attack. Sometimes they go away and later return. If you notice these signals occuring to you or someone else, do not wait:
